According to reports on August 10th, Taiwan has become the new focus of the conflicting relationship between London and Beijing, Foreign Secretary Liz Truss summoned the Chinese Communist Party (CCP)’s ambassador to explain a series of recent actions by the Communist regime against the democratic self-governing island.
The Foreign Secretary said the recent G7 statement had shown that Britain and its allies condemn Beijing escalation around Taiwan in the strongest terms. She urged Beijing to resolve differences through peaceful means.
On Wednesday, the CCP released a white paper that reiterated Beijing’s policy toward Taiwan. “But we will not renounce the use of force, and we reserve the option of taking all necessary measures,” the official English-language version of the document said.
The Sino-British bilateral relationship has been in “free fall” in recent years. London and Beijing have sanctioned each other over the CCP’s problems with Uighurs in Xinjiang.
Truss has a long track record of taking a tough stance against the Communist dictatorship and is the frontrunner in the Conservative Party leadership race. She once vowed to hold the CCP accountable for its policies in Xinjiang.
