Biden Approves Finland and Sweden to Join NATO

President Biden signed endorsements for Finland and Sweden’s to join NATO. This makes the countries one step closer to becoming NATO members. Biden’s endorsement is the final step for U.S. approval of Finland and Sweden’s membership in NATO.

Before signing the document, Biden said that they are confident Finland and Sweden will meet every request of NATO. Biden went on to say the NATO alliance is more united than ever, and adding Finland and Sweden will make NATO stronger.

Finland and Sweden formally applied to join NATO in May. Membership requires unanimous consent of the 30 current NATO members. Initially Turkey questioned granting Finland and Sweden membership. After negations with other NATO members, Turkey signed a memorandum of understanding in June, allowing Finland and Sweden join NATO.

On July 5th, the NATO Secretary-General, the Foreign Minister of Finland and the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Sweden formally signed the Protocol on the Accession for Finland and Sweden to join NATO. In accordance with NATO rules, member states will each approve the protocol.

On August 3rd, the US Senate voted in favour of Finland and Sweden’s application to join NATO.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Glushko previously said that if Finland and Sweden join NATO, Russia will take appropriate measures to ensure its security.
