South Korea President Calls Pelosi’s Visit a Sign of Deterrence Against North Korea

U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi completed a visit to South Korea on Thursday. South Korea President Yoon Suk-Yeol said her visit was seen as “a sign of strong deterrence between South Korea and the US against North Korea.”

Pelosi and congressional delegation arrived in Seoul, South Korea on Wednesday evening and met with the Speaker of South Korea’s National Assembly Kim Jin-Pyo on Thursday morning.

Following the meeting, Pelosi joined Kim Jin-Pyo for a press conference where she stressed that “We have come and travel as a delegation – are three known pillars of security, economics and governance.” “And [in] all three of those areas, the U.S. – South Korea relationship is very strong.”

In a joint statement with Kim Jin-pyo, Pelosi expressed concern about growing tensions on the Korean Peninsula and called on the North Korean authorities to abandon their nuclear weapons arsenal.

Pelosi also spoke by phone with South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol and visited the demilitarized zone in Panmunjom on Thursday evening.

Thereafter, Pelosi travelled to Japan to continue her trip to Asia.
