The U.S. House passed the $280 billion bill on July 28, providing incentives for semiconductor production and other technology investments.
The Chip and Science Act passed the House by a vote of 243-187, with 24 yes votes from Republicans, and House Republican leaders urged members to vote as opposed to the bill.
The bill passed the Senate (Wednesday) by a vote of 64-33. After passing the House on Thursday, it went to President Biden’s desk to be signed into law.
The $280 billion Chip and Science Act will subsidize domestic semiconductor manufacturing while investing billions of dollars in technology innovation.
The Chip and Science Act provides $52 billion in federal grants for semiconductor manufacturing and research and approximately $100 billion over five years for regional technology hubs to support startup companies.
The bill is expected to make the U.S. chip supply chain more resilient, better able to deal with chip shortages, and overcome the influence of Communist China on chip manufacturing.
