Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) reported that four Chinese Communist Party (CCP)’s military aircraft entered Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) on Sunday, July 24. It happened a day before Taiwan launched a series of military exercises and air raid drills.
At 6:53 p.m., the MND announced that the military aircraft of the People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) violated Taiwan’s ADIZ. The aircraft were identified as a Shaanxi Yun-8 anti-submarine warfare aircraft (Y-8 ASW), two Shenyang J-16 fighters, and a Yun-8 tactical reconnaissance aircraft (Y-8 RECCE).
The Y-8 RECCE and J-16 flew over the southwest corner of the ADIZ, between the southwest edge of the median line and the Dongsha Islands. The Y-8 ASW flew a much wider area, from the southwest corner of the ADIZ to the southeast corner and back.
The MND said it responded with emergency combat patrol aircraft, radio warnings, and deployment of anti-aircraft missile systems.
The incursion occurred on the eve of Taiwan’s annual Han Kuang exercise, a series of war drills including live-fire training held from July 25 – July 29, and the Wan An exercise, a simulation of a Chinese air strike from July 25 – July 28.
