Trust in Mainstream Media Has Collapsed, and Even Democrats No Longer Believe Them

Americans’ trust in mainstream media will drop to the second-lowest in 2022, while trust in the U.S. Congress is at the bottom, even most Democrats don’t trust mainstream media establishments, a new Gallup poll found.

Republicans trust newspapers at 5%, Independents at 12%, Democrats at 35%, and overall U.S. trust in newspapers down 5% from 2021 to 16%.

Republicans trust TV news shows 8%, Independents trust TV news shows 8%, Democrats trust TV news shows 20%, overall U.S. trust in TV news programming is down 5% to 11% from 2021.

Why it matters: The erosion of trust in the media is one of the most significant signs of deepening polarization in America.

As Gallup points out, party differences have become a major driver of Americans’ opinions on media credibility. A 2021 Pew Research Center poll found that Republicans have far less trust in media sources deemed “mainstream”. According to the poll, television news programs are now considered the second least trusted institution in the nation after Congress.
