Ukraine Granted its Wish to Become A Candidate for EU Membership

According to reports from foreign media on June 23, the European Union agreed Thursday to put Ukraine on the path to EU membership in an uncharacteristically swift act of unity that will move the embattled country further away from Russian influence and closer to the West. The European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called it a “good day for Europe”.

Leaders of 27 EU countries unanimously agreed to grant Ukraine candidature status at the EU summit in Brussels. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his gratitude on Twitter and declared “Ukraine’s future is within the EU.”

“It’s a victory. We have been waiting for 120 days and 30 years,” he said on Instagram. This period of time refers to the duration of the war and the decades since Ukraine became independent from the Soviet Union. “And now we will defeat the enemy.”
