U.S. Military Historian: U.S. Should Give Ukraine More Aid to Win the War

American military historian Max Booth wrote this Monday that the United States made a conceptual mistake in its military assistance to Ukraine, Ukrainian Novaya Gazeta reported on June 23. The article points out that the United States must understand that this is not just a war of aggression waged by Russia against Ukraine, but a war against the United States and the West as a whole, and thus more actions needed to be taken to help Ukraine win this war of resistance.

Max Booth: The best way to maintain peace is to assist Ukraine in achieving a decisive victory in fighter back the Russian invadersBooth noted that Russia has not just invaded its neighbor; it has actually undermined the international order established by the United States and its allies after 1945. If Russia is not punished for its aggression, it will send a signal to dictators around the world that the West is too weak stop them from doing what they want.

He believes that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin will next set his sights on NATO’s Baltic republics, while the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) will target Taiwan, which could well drag the United States into a World War III conflict.Booth said the best way to keep the peace is to assist Ukraine deal a heavy blow to the Russian aggressor. This would send a powerful message not only to Putin but to every dictator on the planet: don’t anger the West.

If it had been U.S. troops fighting on the front lines, our aid would not have been so stingy, Booth slammed. The United States has spent more than $3 trillion on the war on terror since Sept. 11, 2001, according to a Brown University study of the cost of war. That’s the equivalent of spending an average of $12 billion per month over a period of nearly 21 years.

By contrast, the U.S. allocated only $5.6 billion for security assistance following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on Feb. 24, with the final tranche of $1 billion announced last week. If the conflict had occurred in the United States, by now we might have spent $48 billion or more.

Booth urged that politicians should keep asking themselves the question, “What would we do if our soldiers died in the Donbas?” The U.S. must provide Ukraine with the resources to win the war Russia is waging against the entire West.
