U.S. University Professor Sentenced for Concealing The Experience of Employed by The CCP

On June 16th, Simon Saw-Teong Ang, a professor, and researcher of electrical engineering at the University of Arkansas and an appointee to the Thousand Talents Program of the Chinese Communist Party, was sentenced by the U.S. The District Court for the Western District of Arkansas to 12 months and one day in prison for making a false statement to the FBI about concealing 24 patents in Communist China.

According to Ang’s plea agreement, while working as a professor at the University of Arkansas, Ang held private leadership positions at various companies in the CCP, including Shandong Binzhou Maotong Electronic Technology Co. Ltd., Jiangsu Xuanzhi New Materials and Technology Co., Ltd., etc.

An email of Ang detailed numerous financial awards from Communist China. In particular, after being selected as an expert in the Thousand Talents Program approved by the Shandong province in 2014, he received a government allowance for State Specially Recruited Experts and the Qilu Friendship Award, among others.

There are 24 patents filed in CCP bearing Ang’s Chinese birth name or pinyin, all as inventor or co-inventor. He was successfully selected as one of the Thousand Experts Program in the CCP with one of them.

The University of Arkansas required that its employees promptly furnish to the university with complete disclosure of interest attribution and rights and responsibilities. However, Ang did not disclose the existence of patents for his inventions in CCP and falsely stated that he was not the inventor of these patents when investigated by FBI agents.

In May 2020, Ang was arrested on charges related to Wire Fraud and was immediately formally charged, in January 2021 Ang formally pleaded guilty and signed a plea agreement or he could have been sentenced to up to five years in prison.
