U.S. Ambassador Criticizes Media Censorship and Rumor-Mongering in Communist China

On June 16th, Burns, the U.S. Ambassador to China, publicly criticized the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) for removing the content of Blinken’s China policy speech on the media in May.

At an online event at the Brookings Institution, Burns criticized the CCP for censoring Secretary Blinken’s May speech on U.S. policy towards China posted on Chinese social media. In his speech, he said that the United States hopes that the CCP abide by international rules.

Burns added that the embassy put the presentation on Weibo and WeChat. About two and a half hours later, it was censored and deleted. It was reposted a few days later, and then the CCP deleted it again.

Some assessments within the Communist Chinese government that the United States is declining, and therefore becoming more aggressive toward the CCP, they are inaccurate and an “excuse”, Burns said.

“I think what’s changed is the newly aggressive behavior of the Chinese government … over the last five to ten years. And you’ve seen a counter reaction to that,” he said.
