According to foreign media on June 6th, western officials said CCP was secretly building PLA naval facility in Cambodia, with both countries denying the report and taking extraordinary measures to conceal the operation.
According to the officials, the military presence would be located on the northern portion of Cambodia’s Ream Naval Base on the Gulf of Thailand and slated to a groundbreaking ceremony this week. The naval base would be CCP’s second such overseas outpost and its first in the strategically significant Indo-Pacific region.
The official further pointed out that CCP sought to strengthen its dominance over the Indo-Pacific region by the establishment of the secret military presence and eventually get regional countries to bend to Communist China’s core interests. Meanwhile, CCP attempted to achieve its strategical goal through a combination of coercion, punishment, and inducements in the diplomatic, economic, and military realms.
