On June 1st, Beijing time, a spokesman for the People’s Liberation Army Eastern Theater Command said the recent joint multi-military combat “readiness patrols” in the seas and airspace around Taiwan were necessary actions in response to the “collusion” between U.S. and Taiwan.
During his visit to Japan, President Joe Biden clearly changed the previous U.S. policy of “strategic ambiguity” towards Taiwan, stating that the U.S. would intervene militarily if the CCP were to attack Taiwan. Angered by Biden’s statement, the CCP stepped up its military maneuvers around Taiwan.
On Monday, Taiwan reported the largest incursion into its Air Defense Identification Zone since this January by CCP’s air force. Taiwan’s Defense Ministry said Taiwanese fighter jets scrambled to warn away the CCP’s military aircraft.
The Taiwanese government said that while they want peace, they will defend themselves if necessary and that only the Taiwanese people have the right to decide Taiwan’s future and reject the CCP’s military intimidation and sovereignty claims.
