
On May 14, 2022, U.S. Senate Minority Leader and a Republican member, Mitch McConnell, accompanied by Senators Susan Collins, John Barrasso, and John Cornyn, paid a secret visit to Kyiv and met with President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
McConnell said he has urged U.S. Senator Rand Paul to end opposition to a $40 billion aid package for Ukraine,which has gained overwhelming bipartisan support. Zelenskyy praised it as a strong signal of bipartisan U.S. support for Ukraine and the positive relationship between the two countries, stressing the need to define Russia as a terrorist state.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February, dozens of Western politicians and celebrities have visited Ukraine to show their support. Among them, Jill Biden, wife of U.S. President Joe Biden, visited Kyiv on May 8.
