On April 27, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) voted to suspend Russia’s membership with immediate effect in a special session in Madrid, Spain. More than two thirds of the UNWTO’s 160 member states voted in favour of the resolution.
Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary General of the organisation, tweeted saying that actions will always have consequences and peace is a fundamental human right guaranteed to all.
Spain’s industry, commerce and tourism minister Reyes Maroto, who presided over the session, said Russia’s invasion injured the founding principles of the UN and the value represented by the UN tourism body, such as peace, prosperity and universal respect and called for a cessation of hostilities.
The Spanish government said in a statement that the suspension could be lifted when the Assembly perceived a change in the policy of the Russian Federation.
