On April 22, the United States warned the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) that the United States would “respond accordingly” should the CCP establish a military base in the Solomon Islands.
After a delegation led by Kurt Campbell, the United States National Security Council Indo-Pacific coordinator, met with Solomon Islands Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare and his cabinet, Sogavare reportedly assured that there would be no military bases on the Solomon Islands, a consistent message with his previous public statements.
The White House also issued a statement re-emphasizing that the U.S. will closely monitor developments with other partners in the region and that if the CCP takes steps to establish a substantially permanent military base or other military facilities, the U.S. will be seriously concerned and respond accordingly.
